Custom Furniture: Upholstered Wall and Banquettes

Morgan Chair completed an install today for a Charlotte, NC apartment leasing office.  This focal wall will bring an upscale, modern feel to the main entry of the building.

The wall eventually will have a tv mounted in the center panel.  To finish the center wall section, Morgan Chair installed handmade wall tiles from Nappatile.  With varying thicknesses, these wall tiles have a 3D effect.

Each side of the tiled wall has banquette seating.  The padded backs extend to the ceiling for a dramatic look.

Charlotte NC Custom Furniture: Master Bedroom Sofa and Ottoman

Morgan Chair’s custom furniture added the finishing touches to a master bedroom at a local client’s farmhouse.  The sofa and ottoman were both built by Morgan Chair – and the guest chair was reupholstered.

The sofa was designed to be extra deep for lounging.  Upholstered in mohair, the sofa will continue looking like new for years to come.  Mohair fabric, made from fibers from the Angora goat, is known for its luster, softness and durability.

The ottoman features a simple, clean design.  The oval shape keeps it from becoming too large for the space – both visually and physically.  The firmer top allows for trays to be used.

To complete the room, an existing wooden guest chair was upholstered in a soft velvet.  Our upholsterers restyled the chair to include a clean channeled back (instead of the previous button tufting).

Charlotte Upholstery – Custom Sofas

We built these modern sofas for a client in Charlotte, NC.

The client wanted a clean, white look – but was cautious about a bright white fabric in her house.  We made these sofas with removable (and cleanable) slipcovers.

This is just another example of how Morgan Chair can help you achieve your upholstery goals with either new furniture or reupholstery.

Charlotte Upholstery: Baby Nursery with Custom Furniture

Ericka and I recently finished up Lyla Jane’s nursery – and I wanted to show off some of the furniture that Morgan Chair provided.  Our house is a century-old farmhouse in Monroe, NC — but these pieces & ideas could be used in any home.  You can find even more details at ELM Fotographie’s blog:  Baby Girl #2’s Room.  Ericka does a great describing all the small details in her photography blog.

In this room, Morgan Chair modified a headboard, built a new cornice, upholstered closet doors, made decorative pillows and recovered a rocking chair & stool.  Luckily I had access to the best upholstery employees around!

The headboard (seen in the picture above) was Ericka’s childhood headboard.  In this new room, the headboard was too low.  Morgan Chair raised the overall height of the headboard – this allows the shape to show, even with pillows and shams piled up in front.  I usually recommend a height between 55″ – 60″ when building a new headboard.  Often (especially with a king bed), we build 72″ high for a dramatic look.

Not only was the original headboard too low, it was pretty plain.  The shape was nice, but the inside had thin wooden spindles.  Morgan Chair cut a custom panel that was upholstered & installed to hide the spindles.  This introduced a softer feel to the headboard and more color to the room.  By carefully cutting the shape, the outer edge of the headboard was left exposed.

Other than the antique quilt and some Pottery Barn pieces, Morgan Chair made decorative pillows for the bed.  Our pillows usually are stuffed with a premium down blend and include a hidden zipper.  The pillows on the bed are simple knife-edge pillows with self welting.

The upholstered door panels were an afterthought – but one of my favorite pieces in the room.  Morgan Chair often upholsterers walls, doors & cabinets.  Usually these pieces incorporate a nailhead trim design.  For the old farmhouse, we decided to simply inset the upholstered panels into the doors (with no welt trim or nailheads).  These turned out great & really added some color into the room.

The rocking chair was reused from big sister’s room.  Morgan Chair reupholstered the cushions in a neutral fabric.  Of course, we used our Guardian fabric protection on the cushions!

The stool was an antique wooden stool.  Morgan Chair added padding to the top & upholstered it in the same fabric as the window cornice.  A ruffled skirt added a soft look.

To finish the room off, Morgan Chair made a custom cornice board to top the window.  A little trick:  Mount the cornice as high as possible to make the window look bigger.  This cornice is a simple, scalloped design.  Morgan Chair trims most cornices with welting for a finished look.  For your own space, Morgan Chair will install the cornices – so you won’t have to worry  about the dirty work!

Charlotte Upholstery: Custom Furniture for 5Church

As promised, here are the pictures of the main dining area of 5Church, located in Charlotte, NC.  This project is a wonderful showcase of Morgan Chair’s custom furniture capabilities.

The owners of the restaurant did not want a traditional banquette – they instead preferred a tufted look with exposed turned legs.  This gives the banquettes a more residential, comfortable look.  Thousands of buttons later, the furniture was complete (each button is made and applied by hand!).

In the large room, it was important to line the perimeter walls with custom furniture.  Notice the pieces that wrap around the large columns in the large room.  This high-end look is only achieved through custom furniture.

The owners also wanted a unique sofa for the entry of the restaurant.  As a first for Morgan Chair, we designed a “double sofa” — one in which two seats share a common back.  This saved valuable space & added another unique custom feature to the restaurant.

Custom Upholstery in Charlotte’s Hottest Restaurant (Part 1)

Clients – both new & existing — often ask, “What exactly do you do?”.

“Can you reupholster my existing restaurant booths & chairs?”  Of course — often overnight & outside of normal operating hours.

“Can you manufacture new banquette seating & chairs for my restuarant?”  Of course — we can custom build to your specifications, even fitting around curved walls and hard-to-fit areas.

Check out this recent project for a restaurant in Charlotte, NC.  The owners needed to fill three levels of the restaurant – and relied on Morgan Chair to manufacture the custom banquette seating.  These pictures show the upper levels of the restaurant – sections typically used as a cocktail lounge.

Notice how the booths are custom built to hug the wall, even at the angled part of the room.  Instead of building the every piece straight, Jesse Morgan decided to integrate a soft curve into the room – resulting in more open area for the guests.

Below is the DJ area of the upper floor.  Vertical channels were again used in the backs.  This area includes a hidden feature — the seats are hinged to allow for storage.

The downstairs area will be featured in the next post.  Stay tuned for even more custom-built furniture by Morgan Chair.

We are expanding!

It’s official…Morgan Chair has moved into a much larger facility!  We are now located at 391 Sunset Lake Road in Stanfield, NC.  Formerly the Allendale Furniture Company, the new location will give us more room to grow & offer new services.  Although still providing commercial & residential reupholstery and custom furniture, we will now offer a line of “retail” furniture.  This is an exciting venture of all of us.  Be sure to check back at the new designs — chairs, sofas, beds, etc.

Within the past month, we also have added a new project manager, new upholsterer & new seamstress.  As Charlotte’s largest upholstery company, we continue to grow — one satisfied customer at a time.

We look forward to sharing these new opportunities with you.
