Company History

In the late 1970s, Billy Morgan and his wife Sue moved from their hometown of Stanfield, North Carolina to the bustling city of High Point – a city known then as the “Furniture Capitol of the World.”  It was there that they both fell in love with the art of upholstery.  Training in the top factories – including Henredon and Clyde Pearson – both Billy and Sue quickly excelled in the furniture trade.

In 1983, the young couple decided to move their family, including toddler Jesse, back to Stanfield.  With upholstery skills still fresh in their minds, Billy and Sue established Morgan Chair.

Originally focusing primarily on residential reupholstery, Billy and Sue served many of the Charlotte area’s designers.  Never advertising, Billy relied on word-of-mouth praise to grow the business.

Eventually, customers began requesting commercial upholstery.  As the business expanded into the commercial side, Billy and Sue began hiring additional upholsterers to meet demand.  By training each employee, Billy was still heavily involved in the quality of work being produced.

In 2004, Jesse Morgan joined the family business.  Fresh from college with a degree in Business from UNC-Chapel Hill, Jesse was eager to expand the business further.  Jesse noticed that no local upholstery shops were manufacturing their own frames — nor did anyone have the capabilities to do so.  Jesse set up a woodworking shop within Morgan Chair that was able to quickly produce custom frames for customers, both commercial and residential.  At this point, the business was growing faster than expected.

In 2008, Morgan Chair moved to a larger location in the quaint town of Stanfield.  This larger facility had a separate area for upholstery & woodworking — and was the start of major growth.  From this location, Morgan Chair started shipping its products nationwide.

In 2012, Morgan Chair moved yet again — this time to a former furniture manufacturing facility that offered room for expansion.  Still located in the small town of Stanfield, Morgan Chair serves residential and commercial clients in the greater Charlotte area…and beyond.

Currently, in 2013, Morgan Chair has continued to grow and employees over twenty craftsmen.  Throughout the tough economic times, the company was able to thrive — and has attributed this success to the flexibility of remaining a small family company.
